Internet Could be Dangerous?

Teenagers who spend time browsing the internet excessively are more likely to experience depression than moderate web users according to recent studies.

China researcher Lawrence Lam illustrate some of the signs of excessive Internet use in which at least five to more than 10 hours a day on the web. A teenager can be restless when not in front of the computer and loss of interest in social interaction.

“Some teenagers spend more than 10 hours a day, they really are users who are troubled and they showed signs and symptoms of addictive behavior .. internet browsing and gaming,” said Lam, author of a paper published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

“They can not distract them from the Internet, they feel uneasy if they do not go back to surfing after a while,” said psychologist School of Medicine at the University of Notre Dame in Sydney in a telephone interview, as quoted from Yahoo.

“They do not want to see her friend, not wanting to join the family gathering, do not want to spend time with parents or siblings.

The study involved 1041 adolescents aged between 13 and 18 years in south China’s Guangzhou city, initially free of depression at the beginning of the investigation. Nine months later, however, 84 of them assessed as suffering from depression and excessive surfing have a chance and a half times more vulnerable than moderate users.

“The states that young people who are initially free of mental health problems, but after using the internet can make the depression as obsessed with the consequences,” writes Lam, who co-wrote a paper together with Tzu-wen Peng at the School of Public Health of Sun Yat- sen University in Guangzhou.

Depression may happen because of lack of sleep and stress from an online game competition, obviously Lam.

“People who spend more time on the Internet will lose time to sleep and it was the fact that lack of sleep will cause a high likelihood of depression,” said Lam.

Lam said that as the first study to see the obsession with the use of the internet as a cause of depression.

Previous studies pointed out that the causes of depression is addicted to the Internet, while other studies have shown that the relationship between these two factors do not clearly point to what causes and what are the results.

Lam will perform checks on Internet addiction in our schools so they can get counseling and treatment.
